The Lovett Reading Room

The library houses over 23,000 books covering the military and diplomatic history of the United States emphasizing General Marshall's career from 1900 -1960 and his leadership during World War I and World War II.  The library's books are available for individual loan and through the interlibrary loan network. Contact your library for information on interlibrary loan options.

The main holding of the archives is the collection of the George C. Marshall Papers. In addition, there are over 145 other manuscript collections which are housed in a three-story government security vault which is temperature and humidity controlled to aid in preservation of documents. Collections range from a single folder such as a diary kept by a prisoner-of-war during the Battle of the Bulge to multi-folder divisional histories and newsletters. Major collections include:

Available in the Library/Archives:

Approximately 23,000 books covering Marshall's career from 1900 -1960 with emphasis on twentieth century United States military and diplomatic history. An effort is being made to enlarge this collection to include all United States military and diplomatic history during the twentieth century.

Over two million documents copied from the National Archives covering Marshall's career from 1900-1960.

Thousands of Signal Corps, Quartermaster Corps, Office of War Information, and private collections photographs from both World Wars, Korea, Vietnam, and the Persian Gulf.

Hundreds of maps, including trench maps from World War I, daily situation maps from World War II, and French and German maps.

Approximately 700 posters from all countries involved in both World Wars.

Over 200 oral histories. Films and videos. Journals, periodicals, bound newspapers from the 1930-1940 era, division histories, and Army field manuals.

Guides and Finding Aids to the manuscript collections and to the Marshall Papers are available to aid researchers.
